A Day Journey to Sewanee

Sewanee, Tennessee is one of my favorite places to spend a relaxing day away from home. Just 57 miles from Huntsville, Alabama, it makes for a great day trip. Several large cities are conveniently located within a day’s easy drive. Chattanooga, Tennessee is 50 miles away, with Nashville 93 miles to the Northwest. Birmingham, Alabama is 157 miles Southwest and Atlanta is 165 miles heading Southeast.

With the elevation of the neighboring large cities averaging around 650 feet, Sewanee’s 1929 feet usually accommodates a lower temperature. Nestled in the trees, the rural town creates a great atmosphere for picnics, hiking, or just sitting outside and enjoying local food and drinks. A great combination when looking to get out of the city on a summer day.

University of the South

With a small population of 2500, Sewanee has a wonderful small-town vibe, yet there is much to see. It is best known for The University of the South, a private liberal arts college. The architecture on the campus is something you would expect to see at a large university in England. The beautiful buildings are quite the surprise in such a rural setting. The Gothic style is prominent in the All Saints’ Chapel, which is set in the center of the campus. My favorite building is the McClurg Dining Hall, a massive structure that also depicts the Gothic style. The campus is a great space to walk or bike. There are many lovely spots to explore or just relax.

Food and Drinks

The Blue Chair Café and Tavern

While checking out the university’s campus, take a minute and grab a drink at Stirling’s Coffee House. They have plenty of seating inside and out. A fabulous opportunity to take in the atmosphere of the community, as the coffee shop is ran by the students. If you did not bring a picnic lunch, Shenanigans offers a wide variety of options for lunch and dinner. A local hangout since 1974, where you can grab a burger, sandwich, pizza, or beer. Situated in the oldest building in Sewanee, Shenanigans offers something for everyone. Several items can be prepared vegan and outside seating accommodates any four-legged friends. The Blue Chair Café and Tavern is another gathering place of the community. Whether you are looking for breakfast in the morning or a beer in the evening, you will find what you need at the Blue Chair. Have a seat outside and feel like a local listening to the gossip or playing trivia on Tuesday nights.

Shopping

Not only does the town have a great offering of places to eat, but there are also several shops you must experience. Locals features works of area artists. There are numerous items available for the home or a one-of-a-kind gift. Art includes paintings on canvas, handblown glass, woodworking, bronze sculptures, and more. This shop has limited hours, Thursday through Saturday from noon until 5pm. Lemon Fair offers a plethora of items from clothing to home goods. A unique shop where you can find pottery, antiques, chocolates, even local handmade items. This is a great place to find a souvenir of your trip, open 11 until 5pm, Monday through Saturday. Taylor’s Mercantile is a floral shop with an extensive presentation of gift and decor items. A beautiful shop to peruse, open 9 until 5pm. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. All these shops are located on University Avenue. There is street parking available, and all are in close proximity. Make sure to look at the hours of the shops before you plan your trip to Sewanee.

Relaxing spots with a view

Green’s View

There are a couple of areas with wonderful views around the campus. Green’s View is a beautiful spot looking out on the valley from the mountaintop. There is a trailhead in this location with great trails. The view and trails are easily accessible from the parking area. Benches are available to take a break and enjoy the view. You will find another impressive view at the Sewanee Memorial Cross. The cross is in a wooded section overlooking the valley. A fantastic spot to watch the sunset or spend some quiet time. Again, hiking trails and parking are in the vicinity.

A journey through nature

Sewanee Natural Bridge

Just a few minutes South of the university you will find the Natural Bridge. It is a 25 foot high stone arch that stretches out 50 feet. The bridge is located in a three acre natural area maintained by the Tennessee State Parks, which is part of the South Cumberland Recreation Area. The bridge is positioned in a nice quiet area, a short walk from the parking lot. Walking across the bridge might not be as easy as getting to it. Leashed dogs are welcome on the hiking trails. Do not forget your bug spray.

Selfie spot in Sewanee

Graffiti Rock

One last look. On your way out of town, pull over and take a look at Graffiti Rock. A huge rock that provides a scenic overlook. Steps lead up to the top of the gigantic rock covered with graffiti. People love to stop here for a selfie overlooking the countryside.
